According to Christine Casey, the manager of the Bee Haven, the facility was established because Häagen-Dazs recognized that many of the ingredients in their ice cream (the fruits and the nuts) were dependent on bee pollinators.  They learned about Colony Collapse Disorder and bee health concerns, and they wanted to provide a space where the public may learn about bees and their issues while also learning what they can do to help solve them.

The Bee Haven is located on Bee Biology Road, where visitors can see and learn about bees' tasks in nature as well as what they may do to support the bee population. The Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream Company built the Haven in 2009 on the UC Davis campus.
